Terena – Alandroal

Description

Terena Castle is on top of a hill located between the Alcaide and Lucefécit streams, and overlooking the village that gives it its name.

Terena Castle had its town Charter in 1262, by the royal knight Gil Martins and his wife, D. Maria João.

After the Revolution of 1383-85, D. João I (1385-1423) donated the town of Terena and its castle to the Patronage of the Order of Avis.

Between the end of the 15th century and the first decades of the 16th century, Terena Castle underwent new reconstruction works.

Contrary to what happened in the other fortresses included in this event, during the Portuguese Independence War of “Restauração” (1640-1668), Terena Castle did not benefit from a reconstruction and modernization campaign.

In the following centuries, this fortress was progressively abandoned. In the 18th century, the 1755 earthquake caused serious damage to the castle’s structure.

Since 1946, Terena Castle has been considered a National Monument.

Between 2000 and 2002, the annual meeting of the international association of medieval historical creation societies, Inter-Medieval, was held at Terena Castle.
