Beja

Beja – 29th and 30th
of June 2024

Beja Castle hosted the third edition of the Alentejo Border Castles and Fortresses Event on the theme of the Revolution of 1383-85 – Rota do Constable and Treaty of Windsor, on the 29th and 30th of June.

Description

It was only at the beginning of the 1230s that Beja, together with Moura, Serpa and Aljustrel, was definitively integrated into the kingdom of Portugal against the muslin kingdoms.

In 1253, the King D. Afonso III carried out the wall’s restauration of Beja, that continuing during the reign of D. Dinis.

In 1310 began the Beja keep construction – almost forty meters high and entirely made of marble, it is one of the best-preserved examples of Gothic style military architecture in Portugal.

During the Revolution of 1383-1385, Beja and its castle sided with D. João, Master of Avis (future king D. João I).

Beja Castle underwent modernization in the context of the Portuguese Independence War of “Restauração” (1640-1668), with the addition of bastions in 1644.

In 1808, during the 1st French Invasion of Portugal (1807-08), the city offered strong resistance to the French troops of General Jean-Andoche Junot.

Several years later, the Portuguese Liberal Wars (1832-1834) brought new victims among the local population.

From the Decree of June 16, 1910, Beja Castle began to be classified as a National Monument.
