Arronches
Description
The Convent of Nossa Senhora da Luz de Arronches was founded in 1570 on the initiative of the Friar Hilário de Jesus, a cleric of the Order of Saint Augustine and the King D. Sebastião (1557-1578) authorized the construction of a convent in the village in this year.
Throughout its existence, the Convent of Arronches was often awarded various graces and privileges granted by various Portuguese monarchs and even some Popes, such as Clement X (1670-1676), Benedict XIII (1724-1730) and Benedict XIV (1740-1758).
Like what happened with many other religious houses, the Convent of Nossa Senhora de Arronches was extinguished by the Decree of May 30, 1834, which ordered the dissolution of religious orders in Portugal.
In the last quarter of the 19th century, the building was acquired by the owner of an agricultural farm who changed its internal structure to create conditions for his personal and professional needs, and to house some of his employees.
Currently, the building of the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Luz de Arronches belongs to the Municipality and has been rehabilitated.
