Ouguela – Campo Maior
11th and 12th of May 2024
Description
On September 12, 1297, with the signing of the Treaty of Alcanises between Portugal and the Kingdom of León and Castile, Ouguela was integrated into the Portuguese territory.
In the following year, D. Dinis granted a charter to this town and ordered that the respective defences be rebuilt.
During the reign of D. Fernando the construction of the new Ouguela fence was carried out.
During the Revolution of 1383-85, Campo Maior and the garrison of the respective castle sided with D. Beatriz of Portugal (daughter of King D. Fernando I) and her husband, King D. Juan I of Castile.
As a result of this decision, in 1388, D. João I, together with the Constable of the Kingdom, Nuno Álvares Pereira, laid siege to Campo Maior, whose garrison surrendered after a month and a half.
During the Portuguese Independence War of “Restauração” (1640-1668), the War Council of D. João IV determined the restoration and modernization of Ouguela and in 1644 Ouguela was surrounded by a Spanish force but managed to resist the siege.
Since 1943, by Decree of August 18, the set of fortifications of Ouguela has been classified as a Property of Public Interest.
