Castelo de Vide
Castelo de Vide – 27 and 29 April 2024
During the weekend of April 27th and 28th, hundreds of visitors had the opportunity to watch the day-to-day life of the walled town of Castelo de Vide Castle during the Portuguese Restoration War for his Independence between 1640 and 1668.
Description
The first reference to this town is in the Charter of Tonhe (1233), where Castelo de Vide appears designated as “castello da vide”.
In 1279, The Infante D. Afonso Sanches, son of King D. Afonso III and lord of Castelo de Vide, began construction of the town’s wall.
At the end of the 13th century, this monarch ordered the construction of a new wall, which would be completed in 1327, during the reign of D. Afonso IV
Despite the recurring effort to keep Castelo de Vide well equipped to defend its population and territory, throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the town and its castle were taken and occupied by invading armies: in 1704, in the context of the War of the Spanish Succession and in 1801, during the War of the Oranges (Napoleonic Wars)
Ten years later during the 3rd French Invasion (1810-11), Castelo de Vide is taken by the forces of French Marshal André Massena.
By Decree of June 23, 1910, the group of fortifications of Castelo de Vide currently holds the status of National Monument.
